The Wine Market Intelligence Index

Texas wine placements, tracked monthly. Built by V4Vino.
The Index follows which wines appear on the wine lists of Texas restaurants, hotels, and wine bars, what they cost there, and how that changes over time.

If you make wine, distribute wine, or are bringing wine into Texas, this is the ground truth on where you stand and where the open seats are.

Why now

The market is shifting under everyone's feet, and the wineries that can see it clearly will make better decisions than the ones guessing.

Impact Databank projects US wine depletions will fall for a sixth straight year in 2026, dropping below 300 million cases for the first time in twenty years. The same outlook expects the slide to slow to under two percent a year through 2030. A shrinking market rewards producers who know exactly where their wine sits.

Where people drink matters too. SipSource data from WSWA, released October 5, shows the on premise channel down just 2.4 percent in both volume and value over the last twelve months, while off premise fell 7.5 percent in volume and 6.7 percent in value. The restaurant and bar table is holding up far better than the retail shelf.

And imports are feeling the tariffs. The Bourgogne Wine Board reports Burgundy shipments to the US down 9.8 percent by volume and 21.2 percent by value, to 292 million euros, in the twelve months through July. Every list spot an import gives up is a spot a domestic producer can earn.

That is the opening for Texas wine, and it will not stay open forever. The Index exists so you can watch it happen list by list, and act while it is still there.

What the Index tracks

Every tracked venue, every snapshot:
Producer, wine, vintage, and style, exactly as listed
By the glass and by the bottle prices
New placements, dropped placements, and price movement
Category momentum, from Texas Tempranillo to Champagne, metro by metro

Version one covers San Antonio, Austin, and the Fredericksburg and Hill Country corridor. Houston and Dallas Fort Worth follow in phase two.

What subscribers get

Early warning: if a tracked venue drops your wine, you hear about it that month, while the placement can still be saved. The map: where you are placed, where your competitors are placed, and what they charge, refreshed monthly.

What that is worth

The gap list: the tracked venues carrying none of your category yet, named and sized. In San Antonio that starts with twenty lists pouring no Texas wine at all. One saved placement or one new by the glass account pays for a year of the Index.

Who it is for

Texas wineries that want to grow on premise placements on purpose instead of by accident
Regional distributors and importers who need Texas on premise intelligence
Out of state wineries entering the Texas market and choosing where to push first

How it works

The Index is built entirely from public wine lists and menus. Lists are collected on a set cadence, extracted into a standard taxonomy, and spot checked by a human before anything reaches a subscriber. Facts only: wine, price, venue, date. No guesses, no scraped reviews, no personal data.

From the first full snapshot

In the first full Wine Market Intelligence Index snapshot of San Antonio wine lists (36 lists, 3,768 placements), Texas wine makes the bottle list at 16 of 36 venues, and one list in three pours a Texas wine by the glass.

Inside the full snapshot

3,768 placements tracked · 36 San Antonio lists · $15 median glass price · 24 Texas by the glass pours across the snapshot

The glass gap

Texas wine makes the bottle list at 16 of the 36 venues. Only 12 pour a Texas wine by the glass, and those 24 pours, priced from $10 to $20, are the whole Texas glass presence in this snapshot. Price is not the barrier. Presence is.

The open lane

Twenty of the tracked lists carry zero Texas wines, including the two largest lists in the snapshot, at 304 and 290 placements. Beta members get the named gap list for their category, refreshed every month.

Where do you stand?

The most placed producer in the snapshot holds 35 placements. The most placed Texas producer holds 7 confirmed, across five venues. Want your own count? Request beta access below, name your winery or brand in the form, and we will score it against the tracked lists.

In development

The Texas Wine Consumer Panel, a consented group of Texas wine drinkers surveyed on what they buy, crave, and trade up or down on. Findings will be published in aggregate only. Together with the Index, it powers the quarterly Texas Wine Market Brief.
